Secretary-Treasurer Rich Ewing partnered with Rick Hicks, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 174 to negotiate a multi-local common clauses agreement.

47 Teamsters Local 231 Drivers and Mechanics employed at Waste Management Skagit met at 9:00 am today to review and vote on a new 5-year labor agreement. This historic new agreement will move these Teamsters from the Company Health and Welfare plans to the Washington Teamsters Welfare Trust Medical, Dental and Vision plans, as well as short term disability, life insurance and the wavier of premium plans. The Employer will cover all premium increases for the term of the agreement. The members will also receive employer paid contributions to the new Retiree Welfare Trust Plus XL plan beginning January 2020.

The agreement also includes greatly improved language regarding seniority, discipline, daily and weekly guarantees, excessive overtime protection, vacation and holidays. In addition to this, the wage and pension increases over the term of the agreement will be $9.00 per hour for  current full rate drivers and mechanics, and increases of over $14.00 per hour for recycle drivers. This contract is the first in the area to eliminate the wage and pension disparity between a garbage driver and a recycle driver. Teamsters Local 231 Secretary-Treasurer, Rich Ewing said “This is an historic agreement that was only possible because of the collaborative efforts by the leadership of Locals 174 and 231, and the unwavering solidarity of the rank & file sanitation members in both Local Unions. With this Common Clauses agreement, we have now set the standard for not only the Seattle area, but the entire Pacific Northwest. We congratulate all the Teamsters covered by  this agreement and recognize the incredible investment Waste Management has made in their employees. Now our members look forward to delivering the best possible service to the communities."
